Is hardwax oil as durable as polyurethane?
They protect in different ways. Polyurethane creates a hard chemical shell on top of the wood that resists scratches until the shell is breached. Hardwax oil protects from the inside out, making the wood highly water-resistant. While it may show minor surface scuffs more readily, it will never crack, peel, or flake, and it is vastly easier to repair.
How do I clean and maintain an oiled floor?
Maintenance is easy, but specific. You must use the manufacturer’s designated pH-neutral soap (never harsh supermarket chemicals). Every couple of years, a simple "maintenance oil" coat can be buffed in to completely refresh the floor without any heavy sanding.
